A Century of Charlotte

Built in 1924 as the home of J.B. Ivey & Company — Charlotte's defining department store — and reimagined nearly a century later as one of the most decorated boutique hotels in the American South.

The Building

J.B. Ivey & Company

In 1924, Joseph Benjamin Ivey opened the flagship of his department store empire on North Tryon Street in Uptown Charlotte. For decades, J.B. Ivey & Company was the retail and social heart of the city — a place where generations of Charlotteans came to shop, to see and be seen.

The building itself was remarkable: terrazzo floors, ornate ironwork, ceiling heights that made the space feel like a civic monument rather than a retail establishment. When the store closed, those bones remained — waiting.

In June 2017, The Ivey's Hotel opened its doors, restoring the building to its original grandeur while adding 47 rooms of modern luxury. The 400-year-old French oak floors in the lobby are original to the building. The terrazzo is original. The spirit is unbroken.

Dining at The Ivey's

Three distinct experiences — each reflecting a different mood, a different hour, a different reason to linger.

Church & Union

Restaurant · Chef Jamie Lynch

Chef Jamie Lynch's flagship restaurant on the ground floor. An American brasserie with Southern roots — oysters, charcuterie, grass-fed beef, craft cocktails. James Beard Award-nominated cooking in a room that looks like it was always here.

Sophia's Lounge

Cocktail Bar · Hotel Level

The hotel's intimate cocktail lounge. Curated spirits, a thoughtful wine selection, and the kind of quiet that makes a good conversation possible. Named for a woman worth honoring.

Library Lounge

Wine & Cheese · Daily 5–7 PM

Every evening from 5 to 7 PM, the Library Lounge hosts a complimentary wine and cheese hour for hotel guests. Curated selections, no agenda, just a room worth sitting in.

The Details That Remain

When the hotel was restored, a decision was made: preserve what cannot be replaced. The 400-year-old French oak floors in the lobby are original to the J.B. Ivey building. The ceiling heights are original. The ironwork is original.

Into this historic shell, the designers introduced Frette linen, custom millwork, and room configurations that let the architecture breathe. 47 rooms. No two identical. Every one with a story already written into the walls.
